The metabolic syndrome is a group of symptoms linked to heart disease that include high blood pressure, abnormal blood fats, poor blood sugar regulation, abdominal fat deposition, and inflammation. The problem is linked to poor diet, physical inactivity and genetics. Rats fed a diet hight in carbohydrates and fats developed the metabolic syndrome.
However, a group receiving caffeine supplements for eight weeks showed improvements in body fat, systolic blood pressure, and blood sugar control. The caffeine-fed animals showed improvements in cardiovascular and metabolic health. (Nutrition, 28:1055 - 1062, 2012)
