HMB is an abbreviation for beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate which is a metabolite of the branched chain amino acid Leucine and plays an important role in the synthesis of protein. Due to this, research has suggested that HMB may have an effect on increasing muscle weight and strength. This would be a benifit to those who are bulking to help add lean muscle mass and also to those who are cutting to help preserve muscle and prevent muscle wasting.
HMB is produced by the liver enzyme alpha-ketoisocaproate oxygenase and this enzyme only accounts for 5% of leucine axidation. As a result you wouldn't be able to obtain the positive effects seen in studies. An increased consumption of leucine would no doubt increase the amount of HMB produced, however it does not guarantee the necessary amount will be created due to limited enzyme activity.
